Career Overview: Scott concentrates his practice in the areas of business and commercial litigation with an emphasis in construction law.  He represents contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, owners, architects, engineers and other construction related clients on a broad range of issues and disputes, including payment disputes, delay and disruption claims and construction defect claims.  His practice includes negotiating, drafting and reviewing construction contracts and related documents, as well as preparing and pursuing construction claims, bond claims, mechanic’s liens and liens of design professionals.  Before attending law school, Scott worked as an electrical engineer for four years managing construction projects from design through start-up.

Experience Overview:  Scott has handled complex construction and commercial litigation in Missouri and Kansas, as well as many other jurisdictions, including California, Texas and Ohio.  His experience includes jury trials, arbitration hearings and mediations, and appellate work.  Representative cases:

August 2007 - Co-chaired multi-week jury trial in the Circuit Court of Cole County, Missouri, resulting in a verdict in excess of $2.2 million in favor of a contractor on its construction claim against the owner.

December 2006 - Successfully defended negligence and misrepresentation claims against engineering firm achieving a dismissal of the case on summary judgment.

April 2006 - Significant responsibility and work on a complex construction dispute in Northern California, resulting in a confidential settlement of a multi-party dispute involving the owner, construction manager, contractors, subcontractors and their bonding companies.

August 2005 - Primary responsibility for handling a construction claim against the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission resulting in a confidential settlement after several days of a jury trial.

May 2005 - Jury trial in the Circuit Court of Jackson County, Missouri successfully defending a construction defect claim against a subcontractor. 

Education: Scott received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Iowa State University in 1990.  He earned his Juris Doctor degree with High Honors at Drake University College of Law in 1997 where he was a member of the Drake Law Review.

Bar Admissions: Missouri and Kansas; U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Missouri; U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.

Professional Affiliations and Memberships: Missouri Bar, Kansas Bar, Kansas City Metropolitan Bar, and the American Bar Association.
